Compare electricity providers (where you have a choice)

In some states you can pick a retail electricity supplier. Elsewhere the local utility is assigned. Here is how to tell the difference.

Do you have retail choice?

Examples often include parts of Texas, and some areas in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and others. Your state commission site is the authority.

If you are in competitive Texas areas

Start with the official plan site: Power to Choose. Compare price, contract length, cancellation fees, and renewable content.

What to compare on any plan

Price per kWh and any base fees
Contract length and early-exit fees
Whether the rate is fixed or variable
Customer reviews and complaint history at the state commission
