How to stop or disconnect electricity when you move out

A simple checklist to turn off power at your old address without surprises on the final bill.

1

Call or go online before move-out day

Ask to stop service or disconnect electricity. Give the date you want power to end — usually the day after you leave.

2

Share a forwarding address

So your final bill reaches you. Pay any past-due balance so the stop request is not delayed.

3

Ask for a final meter reading

Confirm the last day of service and keep the confirmation number.

4

Starting somewhere new?

Use transfer service if you stay with the same company, or start electric service if you need a new account.
